Architectural History
Easy to identify from its brilliant yellow façade and wide white-railed staircases, the Elaine Lone Sprauve Library and Museum is located near Cruz Bay and inhabits the Enighed Estate House. Recognized as one of the oldest buildings on the island of St. John, this fully-restored masterpiece is a fitting locale for an establishment that aims to both protect and share the island’s precious history with locals and visitors alike.
From 1750 onward, the estate passed hands between owners several times but was finally recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 after several years of abandonment. Between 1979 and 1980 a full renovation was undertaken on the estate and when the doors opened to the public once more, it was to the admiration of many who had worked hard to restore it to its original glory. Renamed in honor of Elaine Lone Sprauve who had dedicated her life to the betterment of St. John, the estate was redesigned as a library and cultural center.
