St John Vacation Arrival Guide

Making your way from St. Thomas to St. John

This St John Vacation Guide will assist you in getting from the airport in St. Thomas to St. John as quickly as possible.  Remember, the only way to get to St. John is by boat.  If flying via commercial or private aircraft for your St John Vacation, guests will land at the Cyril King Airport on St. Thomas (airport code: STT). From the airport guests will take ground transportation to a ferry or barge terminal on St. Thomas for transfer to St. John.

Obtaining a taxi or rental vehicle at the airport for your St John Vacation

When arriving by commercial aircraft, guests will disembark the aircraft via stairs and walk a short distance to the arrival and baggage claim area. From baggage claim, the following options are available to transfer to the Ferry Boat terminals:

  • PRIVATE TAXI:  Guests who have reserved a private taxi from the St Thomas Airport to the passenger ferry terminal will meet the taxi driver outside the baggage claim area.  The taxi driver will generally be waiting in this area and should have a sign with the passenger name written upon it.  To assist with booking a private taxi, contact the CimmaronStJohn Concierge at 340-227-9255 prior to arriving in St. Thomas.
  • PUBLIC TAXI:  Guests who are taking a public taxi to the passenger ferry terminal will get their luggage and then proceed to the taxi stand located immediately outside the baggage claim area and tell the dispatcher they are traveling to St. John from either the Crown Bay Ferry terminal or the Red Hook Ferry terminal. They will then be assigned to a taxi (large passenger van) and transported to the appropriate Ferry Passenger terminal.
  • AIRPORT RENTAL CAR:  Guests who have reserved a rental vehicle in St. Thomas should check-in at the car rental counters (if an airport location) or to the designated off-airport location.  The car rental agency will provide directions to the car barge terminal in Red Hook for transport to St. John.

Regardless of how guests proceed from the airport to the ferry/barge terminal, we request that all guests follow the St John Vacation Guide and call CimmaronStJohn as soon as you have arrived in St. Thomas and again when leaving the airport to confirm your arrival and that you are on the way to the ferry/barge terminal.

From the airport to the ferry or barge terminal

The drive from the airport to the Red Hook passenger ferry or car barge will take approximately 30-45 minutes or longer depending on traffic and stops along the way. Under normal circumstances, passenger ferries leave Red Hook for St. John every hour on the hour daily with the last ferry departing for St. John at 12:00 midnight.   Car barge departure times can vary throughout the day depending on how many barges are in operation, but generally, there is a car barge running each hour on the hour and/or half hour.  Contact your CimmaronStJohn Concierge upon arrival to confirm current ferry and barge schedules.

It is very important to note the car barge departure times from Red Hook and from St. John based on individual flight arrival/departure times.  If guests have rented their vehicle in St. Thomas and do not arrive in Red Hook in time to take the last car barge to St. John, they will then have to leave their rental car in the public parking lot at Red Hook, take the passenger ferry to St. John that evening, and return to St. Thomas the following day to bring their rental car over to St. John.

Once guests are on the  ferry boat or car barge, we request they text or call CimmaronStJohn at 340-227-9255 again to confirm the departure time of their ferry to St. John.

Arriving on St. John

Upon arrival at the passenger ferry terminal on St. John, guests will proceed to the car rental agency where they will be met by a CimmaronStJohn hospitality team member who will escort guests to their St. John vacation rental and leave guests with the keys to their island vacation home.

Remember to call or text us at 340-227-9255 when you are leaving the St. Thomas airport and again when you are boarding the ferry/barge in St. Thomas to ensure CimmaronStJohn is prepared for your arrival.
