Making your way from St. Thomas to St. John
This St John vacation guide will assist you in getting from the airport in St. Thomas to St. John as the only way to get to St. John is by boat. If flying via commercial or private aircraft for your St John vacation, guests land at the Cyril King Airport on St. Thomas (airport code: STT). From the airport guests will take ground transportation to a ferry or barge terminal on St. Thomas for transfer to St. John.
Obtaining a taxi or rental vehicle at the airport for your St John Vacation
When arriving by commercial aircraft, guests will disembark the aircraft via stairs and walk a short distance to the arrival and baggage claim area. From baggage claim, the next options are:
- If guests have reserved a private taxi to the passenger ferry terminal, the driver will generally be waiting at the entrance to the baggage claim area, guide guests to the private taxi after luggage is retrieved, and transport guests to the passenger ferry terminal.
- If guests are taking a public taxi to the ferry terminal, after luggage is retrieved they proceed to the taxi stand located immediately outside the baggage claim area and tell the dispatcher they are traveling to St. John. They will then be assigned to a taxi (large passenger van) and transported to the passenger ferry terminal.
- If guests have reserved a rental vehicle in St. Thomas, the car rental agency will provide directions to the car barge terminal in Red Hook.
Regardless of how guests proceed from the airport to the ferry/barge terminal, we request that all guests follow the St John vacation guide and call CimmaronStJohn when leaving the airport to confirm they have landed and are on the way to the ferry/barge terminal.
From the airport to the ferry or barge terminal
The drive from the airport to the Red Hook passenger ferry or car barge will take approximately 30-45 minutes or longer depending on traffic and stops along the way. Passenger ferries leave Red Hook for St. John every hour on the hour daily with the last ferry departing at 12:00 midnight. Car barge departure times can vary throughout the day depending on how many barges are in operation, but it is very important to note car barge times (the last barge leaves for St. John at 7:00 pm) based on flight arrival/departure times. The last car barge leaves Red Hook at 7:00 pm daily. If guests have rented their vehicle in St. Thomas for their St John vacation and do not arrive in Red Hook in time to take the last car barge to St. John, they must leave their rental car in the public parking lot at Red Hook, take the passenger ferry to St. John that evening, and return to St. Thomas the following day to catch a car barge to St. John. Once guests arrive at ferry/barge terminal, we request they call CimmaronStJohn again to confirm the departure time of their ferry St. John.
